Question

The following table shows the monthly unemployment rate from July 2007 until July 2009. Complete parts a) through d) below. 4.7 4.7 4.7 4.7 4.7 4.8 4.9 5.1 5.2 5.2 5.4 5.6 5.7 6.4 6.7 6.9 7.1 7.1 7.2 7.2 7.4 8.5 9.3 9.5 9.6 a) Calculate the mean. x = (Do not round.) b) Calculate the median. The median is. (Do not round.) c) Determine the mode Select the correct choice below and, if necessary, fill in the answer box to complete your choice. A. The mode(s) is (are). (Use a comma to separate answers as needed.) B. There is no mode in this data set.

Explanation / Answer

a) Mean is nothing but the sum of all the values divided by total number of values = 158.3/25 = 6.332

So mean = 6.332

b) Here sample size n = 25 that is n is odd

Steps of finding median when n is odd

step 1) First arrange the data set in increasing order

Since the given values already in increasing form so don't need to do this step.

Steps 2) the median is the (n + 1)/2 th value.

That is here (25 + 1) /2 th value = 13th value = 5.7

So median = 5.7

c) Mode is nothing but the most repeated value in the given data set

Since here 4.7 repeated 5 times so mode = 4.7
