Question
create a research question in the field of psychology that you are interested in researching right questions clearly include a brief background of the problems you are proposing and why it is important in the field of psychology State the null and alternative hypothesis in both words and statistical notation needed to address a research question shoes with statistical test would be used to conduct and supported with research describe the type of data needed to be collected to conduct study and what techniques are used by the three resources to support your explanation
Explanation / Answer
There can be many psychological tests that can be conducted. One proposed research question could be:
"Do the young high school students and college students suffer from eating disorders?"
Background
Eating disorders also known as anorexia nervosa is a psychological problem in which someone might intentionally curbe or limit the amount of food they intake because of a strong drive to stay thin or a false fear of gaining weight. The perception about one's body shape is distorted and has a undue psychological affect on the person's well being. Limiting the amount of food intake disturbs the nutritional balance and might cause other medical illness such as low blood pressure, etc, including death. Social attitudes, peer pressure, influence of social media and television, family influences, genetics, neurochemical and developmental factors may contribute in development and perpetuation of anorexia nervosa. Approximately ninety percent of young girls are affected by this psychological disorder. Even young men are affected by this.
Anorexia nervosa might significantly affect the medical and emotional well being of a person. Without proper treatment the conditions may become severe and can cause loss of health and in severe situations might cause death. Apart from the it may have several short term affects such as low blood pressure, dehydration, osteoporosis, depression, itmight affect the gastrointestinal track leading to shrinkage of muscles.
So it is important that the eating disorders among the young poppulation is tackled correctly. Early diagonosis and treatment is necessary for a normal and halthy groeth of the body. Healthy eating habits and realistic body image might be a encouraged among the young population.
THE STATISTICAL TEST
The population will include the students of school and colleges. This could we divided ito various agegroups such as 12-15, 16-18, 18-20, 20-22 and the two categories such as "HAS ANOREXIA NERVOSA" and "DOES NOT HAVE ANOREXIA NERVOSA"
Null hypothesis: The different age group of school and college students do not suffer from eating disorder/ do not have anorexia nervosa i.e pi=0
Against
alternative hypothesis: Thedifferent age groups of school and college students poses the traits of eating disorder/ have significant traits of anorexia nervosa i.e pi0
** pi is the proportion of people in the ith age group showing the characteristic of anorexia nervosa.
The test statistic that will be used here will be the standard chi-squared test to test the hypothesis.
2 =(fi –ei)2/ei
where fi is the observed frequenchy
ei is the expected frequency
For conducting the survey a questionnaire can be designed. For example including five quetions
A postive response(YES) to 3 or more question can be considered as a sensitivity towards anorexia nervosa and can be counted as 1 in the category "HAS ANOREXIA NERVOSA" and if not that the complimentary can be considered.
Questionnaire can be distributed within campus or can even be posted online on the social mediums for maximum coverage.
**the expected frequencies can be calculated using the formulas or reviews/ already conducted research data can be used to find the expected frequencies.
