a. Find the probability that the husband votes and his wife doesn't or that the wife votes and her husband doesn't.

b. Find the probability that a husband will vote provided his wife is going to vote.

c. Find the probability that a wife will vote provided her husband is going to vote.

Explanation / Answer

P(wife will vote) = 0.5

P(husband will vote) = 0.2

P(both will vote) 0.05

a) P(husband votes and his wife doesn't or that the wife votes and her husband doesn't) = P(only husband will vote) + P(only wife will vote)

                                              = [P(husband will vote) - P(both will vote)] + [P(wife will vote) - P(both will vote)]

                                              = [0.2 - 0.05] + [0.5 - 0.05]

                                              = 0.6

b) P(husband will vote | wife will vote) = P(both will vote) / P(wife will vote)

                                                            = 0.05 / 0.5

                                                            = 0.1

c) P(wife will vote | husband will vote) = P(both will vote) / P(husband will vote)

                                                            = 0.05 / 0.2

                                                            = 0.25
