Question

You have a factory that manufactures a specific IC chips. You would like to run an inventory to determine the number of defected IC chips among the manufactured ones. Explain when you will be using the following distributions (i.e., build an experiment for each of the following distributions): 1. Bernoulli 2. Binomial 3. Poisson 4. Hypergeometric 5. Geometric 6. Negative Binomial 7. Multinomial 8. Normal For each of the aforementioned distributions, define your random variable and the mathematical formula for the distribution.

Explanation / Answer

1) we use bernoulli when we have to check only one chip i.e n=1 and the chip can be defective or non defective with a probability of p and 1-p respectively.

2) we will use binomial distribution when the chips to be checked are more than 1 i.e n > 1 and the probability of each chip being defective and non defective is constant

3) Poisson distribution will be used when the rate of arrival of defective or non defective chips is given and we have to find certain defective or non defective chips

4) Hypergeometric will be used when we hve to find k successes in n draws, without replacement, from a finite population of size N that contains exactly K successes.e.g. finding 6 defective chips from 10 draws when total defective chips are 20 and total chips are 100.Here n=10, k=6, N=100, K=20
