Question

You are running a series of statistical tests in SPSS using the standard criterion for rejecting a null hypothesis. You obtain the following p values. Test 1 calculates group differences with a p value = .07. Test 2 calculates the strength of association between two variables with a p value = .50. Test 3 calculates group differences with a p value = .001. For each test below, state whether or not you reject the null hypothesis. For each test, also explain what your decision implies in terms of group differences (Test 1 and Test 3) and in terms of the strength of association between two variables (Test 2).

Test 1 (group differences) =

Test 2 (strength of association) =

Test 3 (group differences) =

Explanation / Answer

Solution:-

1) Test 1 (group differences), p value = 0.07

We have to accept the null hypothesis, since p value test(0.07) is greater than the significance value(0.05).

From the above test we conclude that we do not have sufficient evidence in the favor of the claim that there is differnce between means of groups.

2) Test 2 (strength of association) p value = 0.50

We have to accept the null hypothesis, since p value test(0.50) is greater than the significance value(0.05).

From the above test we conclude there is no association between two variables.

3) Test 3 (group differences), p value = 0.001

We have to reject the null hypothesis, since p value test(0.001) is less than the significance value(0.05).

From the above test we conclude that we have sufficient evidence in the favor of the claim that there is difference between means of groups.
