Question

Some research suggests that college student athletes who are subject to high stress levels (due to academic demands, personal problems, or other sources) are more likely to be injured during a game. A random sample of student athletes was obtained, and a questionnarie was used to determine stress level of each prior to a game. Following the game, the injury status of each athlete was also recorded. The data are summarized in the following table. Is there any evidence to suggest that stress level and injury are dependent? Conduct the appropriate hypothesis test with alpha = 0.05. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization in Canada provides the public with specific health recommendations and summary reports. A random sample of patients who tested positive for influenza during the 2012-2013 flu season was obtained. Each person was classified by age group and influenza type. The data are summarized in the following table.

Explanation / Answer

We have to test the null hypothesis

H0: Injury is independent of stress level of athlete.

..versus the alternative hypothesis

Ha: Injury is dependent of stress level of athlete.

The calculations are as follows from where we have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis as 2(2)=6.42, p=0.0404<0.05.
