Question

A researcher believes that treating seeds with a certain additive before planting can enhance the growth of plants. An experiment to investigate this is conducted in a greenhouse. From a large number of Roma tomato seeds, 24 seeds are randomly chosen and 2 are assigned to each of 12 containers. One of the 2 seeds assigned to each container is randomly selected and treated with the additive. The other seed serves as a control. Both seeds are then planted in the same container. The growth, in centimeters, of the plants is measured after 30 days, with the results summarized below. (a) State the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses for testing whether the additive enhances the growth of plants, on average. Be sure to define your population parameter(s) in the context of the problem. (b) Compute the test statistic and, if applicable, state its degrees of freedom. (c) Compute the exact p-value or give a range, as appropriate. (d) State the conclusion of the hypothesis test in the context of the problem. (Assume a significance level of 0.05)

Explanation / Answer

let difference=d=treatment-control and here number of paired seed=n=12

(a) null hypothesis H0:d=0 and

alternate hypothesis H1:d>0

(b) here we use paired t-test and t=d-/(sd/sqrt(n))=2.015/(1.763/sqrt(12))=3.96 with n-1=12-1=11 df

(c) one tailed p-value=0.0011 ( using ms-excel command=TDIST(3.96,11,1))

(d) since significance level=alpha=0.05 is more than p-value=0.0011 so se fail to accept H0 and conclude that d>0 or treatment added additive growth in plants
