Question

A randomized control trial was designed to compare the effectiveness of splinting versus surgery in the treatment of carpel tunnel syndrome. (A syndrome of tingling or numbness in the hand followed by pain in the wrist and arm.) The following is a MINITAB output showing cross classification of type of treatment with whether the treatment was successful or unsuccessful. All Cell Contents: Count Expected count Contribution to Chi-square Pearson Chi-Square = 9.750, DF = 1, P-Value = 0.002 What would be the null and alternative hypothesis for testing to see if there is a relationship between type of treatment and outcome of the treatment? State your conclusion for the test above using an alpha level of .05. (If you reject the null hypothesis indicate what specific conclusions you can make for the different categories)

Explanation / Answer

a)null Hypothesis: type of treatment and outcome are independent

alternate hypothesis:type of treatment and outcome are dependent

b) for degree of freedom =(row-1)*(column-1) =(2-1)*(2-1) =1

at 0.05 level and 1 degree if freedom ; critical value =3.8415

from above test statistic value =0.8482+0.9644+3.7145+4.2233=9.7504

as test stat is higher then critical value, we reject null hypothesis and conclude that :type of treatment and outcome are dependent
