Question

The size of an infant’s thyroid can predict the health of that infant. A journal article has been submitted describing a study where the researchers wanted to see if there were differences in thyroid volume size between infants born prematurely and those born full term. You have been asked to review the journal article and find the statement, “Thyroid volume was found to be skewed, so we employed a nonparametric test to investigate the following hypothesis: H0: µ1 – µ2 = 0 vs. H1: µ1 – µ2   0; the mean differences between the two groups are not different versus they are different.” What non- parametric tests could you use? If you want to use an ANOVA model (parametric test) what would you need to do?

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER: Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon -U test is appropriate non-parametric test  to investigate the following hypothesis: H0: µ1 – µ2 = 0 vs. H1: µ1 – µ2   0;. This test is an alternative test for student independent sample 't' test.

We can ANOVA also, if the given data satisfies the fundamental assumptions of ANOVA. It requires factor (independent variable) and dependent facor (responce variable). But here only two groups are there. So student independent sample 't' test is better (parametric test).
