Question

The following table is a data set that is generated for an object that is "thrown" upward into the air. Some of the distances are approximate. Which is the more appropriate title for this graph? a. Seconds vs Distance b. Distance vs Seconds Alex is a bit confused by the analysis. While Alex says he sees a clear and strong association between seconds and distance, he can't understand why the correlation coefficient is so low. Please explain to Alex what is going on here. Alex also sees that the equation is giving him rather bizarre results. Explain why.

Explanation / Answer

9. The appropriate title for the graph will be Seconds Vs Distance.

10. The correlation coefficient tells the strength of linear association between two variables and in the scatterplot, we can see that the relationship between the variables are not linear. Due to this, correlation coefficient is very low.

11. The regression equation will also give bizzare results because the variables are not linearly related. The graph is a parabola and hence, a quadratic relationship between the variables need to be set up to get the correct prediction.
