Question
A study was done using a treatment group and a placebo group The results are shown in the table Assume that the two samples are independent simple random samples selected from normally distributed populations, and do not assume that the population standard deviations are equal Complete parts (a) and (b) below Use a 0 05 significance level for both parts a. Test the claim that the two samples are from populations with the same mean. What are the null and alternative hypotheses? A. H_0: mu_1 = mu_2 H_1: mu_1 ? mu_2 B. H_0 mu_1 notequalto mu_2 H_1: mu_1Explanation / Answer
Test statistic:
n1 = 28 , x1 = 2.32 , s1 = 0.99 , n2 = 40 , x2 = 2.69 , s2 = 0.67
SE = sqrt[(s1^2/n1) + (s2^2/n2)]
SE = sqrt[(0.99^2/28) + (0.67^2/40)]
= 0.215
t = [ (x1 - x2) - d ] / SE
= [ (2.32 - 2.69) - 0 ] / 0.215
= -1.7209
p value = .089936.
As p value is greater tahn 0.05 so we fail to reject the null hypothesis
