Question

The dataset lowbwt.dat contains information collected for a sample of 100 low birth weight infants. Measurements of systolic blood pressure are saved under the variable sbp. Values of the Apgar score recorded five minutes after birth (a measure of neonatal oxygen deprivation) are saved under the variable apgar5. a) This is the Stata output for the test of the correlation (Pearson) between SBP and Apgar score. State the null and alternative hypotheses for the test, and interpret the conclusion (Does it appear that Apgar score tends to increase or decreases as sbp increases?)

Explanation / Answer

Null hypithesis H0:row = 0

Alternative hypothesisH1:row not=0(two-tailed test)

test statistic t = r*sqrt(n-2)/sqrt(1-r2) follwos t distribution with (n-2) degree of freedom

therefore t = 0.1487*sqrt(100-2)/sqrt(1-(0.1487)2) = 1.472/0.9888 = 1.4886

fro t table the critical value of t at 5% level with n-2 = 100-2 = 98 df is 1.984

therefore calculated value < table value(1.4886<1.984)

therefore H0 is accepted i.e we may conclude that Apgar score not increase or decrease as compared to Sbp
