Question
Each year the EPA does an on the current models of vehicles sold in United States. The data provided in this example is a subset of this analysis, if you are curious you may access the full data set from the EPA. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/download.shtml. The following graphical display and numerical summary show the variable estimate annual fuel cost of new vehicles. a, What type of variable is annual fuel cost? Quantitative or Categorical? b. Using the graphical display and numerical summary, thoroughly describe the distribution of estimated annual fuel cost. Include context, shape, center and spread of the data and whether there are any outliers.Explanation / Answer
It is very much clear that the variable annual fuel cost is QUANTITAVE .By looking at the graph anoe can easily say that the variable anuual fuel cost is normally distributed , that is it follows Normal(Gaussian) distribution with estimated mean $1815 and standard deviation $459. Theoretically for Normal Distribution mean and median are same and from the sample data also we can observe that sample mean and sample median are very close. We can observe that the data is slightly positively skewed , that is it slightly elongated on the right side. Hence the largest obsevation can be considered as an outlier but since the raw data is not available it cannot be verified.
