Then, for 20 minutes, the child was given unsupervised access to same items as those the adult had used, including the furry toys. During this time the child was observed, and the number of nurturing acts shown towards the furry toys by the child was noted. The children in the second group, the "Different-sex adult" group, were given the same treatment as those in the first group, except that the adult model was of the opposite sex to that of the child. Each child's behavior was measured in the same way as in first group. Children in the third group, the control group, were given the same treatment, except that the adult involved did not show nurturing behavior towards the toys. (In this group, the sex of the adult was chosen randomly.) Each child's behavior was measured in the same way as in the first two groups.
