Question

The following table shows the profile, by the math section of the Reasoning Test, of admitted students at uaAfor the Fall 2011 semester. SAT SAT Reasoning Test-Math Section 700-800 600-699 500-599 400-499 200-399 Total Admitted 6,611 3,981 1,388 Not admitted 6,622 8 12,373 otal applicants 13.23 13,876 9,890 4,974 1,363 36,725 17.057 11.278 5350 1,371 49,098 Determine the probability of the following event. (Round your answer to the nearest .01.) HINT [Example 6.1 An applicant had a Math SAT below 500.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1:

Probability that an applicant has a SAT score less than 500:

= Total number of applicants with that score/ Total number of applicants.

= (5359 + 1371 ) / 49098

= 0.14

Therefore 0.14 is the required probability here.

Question 2:

P( hispanic or latino ) = e = 0.27

P( white , not hispanic ) = d = 0.54

P( african american ) = a = 0.1

P ( Asian ) = b = 0.06

P( other ) = c = 0.03

Now the probability that the student is neither hispanic, Latino nor African American

= 1- P( hispanic or latino ) - P( african american )

= 1 - 0.27 - 0.1

= 0.63

Therefore 0.63 is the required probability here.
