Question

Part of doing a good analysis is understanding and controlling for relevant factors: So, if one wants to examine why crime might be higher in one neighborhood compared to another, what quantifiable measures would you want to include for each neighborhood? List at least 5 others factors and provide a justification for each measure's inclusion. Remember, the variables must be quantifiable, and if these variables are not readily available (indicate whether you believe this data is available or not), then how would you collect this data. For each of the 5 variables, describe explicitly where you found the data if available online and how, and if the data would need to be collected, describe exactly how this should be done.

So if y = is the number of crimes

I will include 1 factor: number of street lights, you will now add your 5 (based on the above instructions)

Objective: Researchers usual focus on one factor based a theory but understand that it is necessary to include other factors, since previous research has shown that other factors could have an impact on the dependent variable.

Explanation / Answer

Apart of no. of street lights following five variables are suggested.

X1 = number of unemployed people in the neighbourhood.

Justification: Unemployment is commonly accepted determinant of crime.

X2 = number of poor people in the neighbourhood.

Justification: Living conditions of poor people are commonly seen to increase crime.

X3 = number of graduate females in the neighbourhood.

Justification: Education in female is linked with sex related crimes. An educated girl is less likely to be trapped in sexual crimes.

X4 = population size of the neighbourhood.

Justification: Higher population size will reduce share of natural resources per person and it may be one of the determinant.

X5 = area of the neighbourhood

Justification: Area may be one of the determinant because it provides distribution of natural resources in the population.

All of the above variable can be available on line. X3, X4, X5 may be obtained from the website of census, X1 can be collected from Employment Office and X2 may be found from site of Economic ministry.

However, if the data is not available on line for a few variables, a sample survey shall be performed and data on those variables may be collected. And from this data we may estimate value of the variable of a neighbourhood.
