Question 5 – Surveys

Lecturers need feedback from students on what they thought about a module.

a)      Outline a way of getting feedback for this module. Who would be approached and how? Explain why you think this would (or would not) avoid the various pitfalls possible.

b)      Devise two questions that should be asked as part of this exercise (one requiring an answer on a categorical scale and one on an interval scale). Explain why these would (or would not) avoid the possible pitfalls.

NB I have no input to the standard module feedback questionnaire sent to students, so this shouldn’t be assumed to be the best that can be done.

(this is the only information given for this question)

Explanation / Answer

Answer to part a)

The best way to get the feedback for the module is to present close ended small questionnaire, that is easily self understood and interpret by the students correctly

It must be less time consuming, so that maximum students can provide their responses

The students who recieved the module , or attended its lecture must be the once who should be surveyed

The best way to survey is , to collect the students in a class room and make then fill the questionnaires. If in case this is not possible the second best way is to mail the questionnaires to the students.

.

In the first way the pitfall of no response can be avoided, if the second method of mailing the questionnaire is chosen, in that case there is a chance of students no responding to the mail , but it is better than other methods like telephonic interview, because in that case errors due to interviewer are included.

In email the questionnaire, the interviewer has no active interaction , thus chances of error on part of the interviewer can be avoided

.

Answer to part b)

The two questions in general that must be included in the survey is:

One categorical question is as follows:

Rate the content of the module on the basis of understanding :

Easy, average , difficult

these can be the three levels of understanding that cane be expected as response from the sutdents

.

One question based on interval scale is:

Rate the question on the basis of coerage of the topic: 1 = little or no coverage, 5 = full coverage

1,2 ,3 4,5

Thus teh answer choices here are 1 to 5

.

This is the easiest way to know these responses
