Question
Let’s say that we think neighborliness has nothing to do with racial relations and trust within a neighborhood. Instead, we believe that neighborliness has to do with how much an individual feels they need to personally protect themselves. I created a variable that measures the extent to which people engage in protective behaviors, like have an alarm at their home, a dog, weapons, etc…The higher this variable is, the more protective behaviors they engage in. Here’s the correlation between protective behaviors and neighborliness below; again focus just on the yellow. Answer the following questions.
a. (2 points) What is the type, strength and direction of the relationship between neighborliness and protective behaviors?
b. (2 points) Interpret why the correlation between neighborliness and protection is stronger than the relationship between neighborliness and race/ethnic trust. Again, here’s no right or wrong answer here, I just want you to think about the concepts behind the correlations.

Explanation / Answer
1. a) there exist negative correation between them since rxy = -0.370
Strength is low and direction is (opposite) -ve correlation between them
b) H0: the correlation between neighborliness and protection is no stronger than the relationship between neighborliness and race/ethnic trust
H1: the correlation between neighborliness and protection is stronger than the relationship between neighborliness and race/ethnic trust
Here P-value = 0.001 which is less than alpha = 0.05, So reject H0
Thus we conclude that the correlation between neighborliness and protection is no stronger than the relationship between neighborliness and race/ethnic trust
