Question

A start-up company began by making 10 glucose strips per shift, and management was concerned that the people on the night shift might be less attentive since their results appeared less precise. The day shift measured a standard to have an average of 100 mg with a standard deviation of 12.9, whereas the night shift measured the same standard’s average to be 100 mg but with a standard deviation of 21.4. Use the F-test to decide whether the standard deviations disagree with one another within 95% confidence.

Explanation / Answer

here s1 =12.9

and s2 =21.4

for 0.05 level and (n-1=9) degree of freedom for each shift critical values of F distribution are =0.2483 and 4.026

here F stat =(s1/s2)2 =0.3634

as F stat falls in b/w critical values and do not fall in rejection region we can not reject null hypothesis that both are same.
