Question

a. What was the independent variable in this analysis? b. What was the dependent variable in this analysis? c. Describe both samples (using the given statistics). d. What are the null and alternative hypotheses for this study? e. Can you assume equal variances based on Levene's Test? f. Write out the appropriate t-test formula using the numbers given in the output. Make sure to write out the original formula in symbols before putting in the numbers. g. Complete Hypothesis Test Step 4. i. Decision about null hypothesis? ii. Is it significant? iii, Sentence iv. APA style

Explanation / Answer

a. The independent variable in the analysis is type of school ie public or private

b. The dependent variable in this analysis is reading score

c.Using above statistics, we can say that there are 168 observations for reading score in public school while 32 observations in private school. The mean reading score for public school is 51.8452 with a standard deviation of 10.422. So, all scores in public school lies in the range of (51.8452-10.422) and (51.842+10.422). Similarly, the mean reading score for private school is 54.2500 with a standard deviation of 9.196. So, all scores in public school lies in the range of (54.2500-9.196) and (54.2500+9.196).

d.The null hypothesis (H0) and alternative hypothesis (H1) of the independent samples T test can be expressed in two different but equivalent ways:

H0: µ1 = µ2 ("the two population means are equal")
H1: µ1 µ2 ("the two population means are not equal")

OR

H0: µ1 - µ2 = 0 ("the difference between the two population means is equal to 0")
H1: µ1 - µ2 0 ("the difference between the two population means is not 0")

The hypotheses for Levene’s test are:

H0: 12 - 22 = 0 ("the population variances of public and private schools are equal")
H1: 12 - 22 0 ("the population variances of public and private schools are not equal")
