In each of the following scenarios, determine if the data are paired or unpaired. Assessing gender-related salary gap by comparing salaries of randomly sampled men and women. A school board would like to determine whether there is a difference in average SAT scores for students at one high school versus another high school in the district. To check, they take a simple random sample of 100 students from Unpaired v each high school. We randomly sample 50 items from Target stores and note the price for each. Then we visit Walmart and collect the price for each of those same 50 items. Comparing arte thickness at the beginning of a study and after two years of taking Vitamin E or the same group of Unpaired v patients.

Explanation / Answer

By definition, two data sets are paired when one-to-one relationship exists between values in the two data sets. Each data set has the same number of data points. Each data point in one data set is related to one, and only one, data point of the other set.

(a) Unpaired. REASON: Each of the 2 data sets has not the same number of data points.

(b) Unpaired. REASON: Though the number of data points is 100 in each of the 2 sets, one - to - one relation does not exist beteen the 2 sets.

(c) Paired: REASON: Both the conditions are satisfied.

(d) Paired: REASON: Both conditions are satisfied.
