Question

Jill has a swimming pool in her back yard. It is shaped like a rectangle and measures approximately 16.3 feet wide and 26.2 feet long. It is an average of 5 feet deep. during a few hot weeks during the summer, some water evaporates from the pool, and jill needs to add 8 inches of water to the depth of the pool, using her garden hose. Although her water pressure varies, the water flows through Jill's garden hose at an average rate of 10 gallons/minute.

3. How long will Jill need to run the hose? Express your answer in hours and minutes.

Your conversion factors should be shown and follow the dimensional analysis format. Thank you in advance.

Explanation / Answer

First figure out the conversion formula for feet to meters and inches to meters:

1 ft= approximately 0.3048 meters

So a width of 16.3 ft is 4.97 meters =5 meters rounded

The length of 26.2 ft is 7.99 meters = 8 meters rounded

The depth of 5 ft is 1.52 meters = 1.5 meters rounded

8 inches = 0.2032 metres = 0.2 metre

Volume of pool to be filled = 5 * 8 * 0.2 = 8 metre^3
10 gallon = 37.8541 litre = 38 litre

1000 litres = 1 cubic metre

So 10 gallons/minute = 38 litre/minute

Volume of pool to be filled = 8 cubic metres = 8000 litres

So required time = 8000/38 = 210.526 minutes

= 210.526/60 hours

= 3.51 hours......

Thank you........
