Question

1. I want to conduct a research study exploring what sorts of variables may correlate with a diagnosis of Tendinosis. In particular I am interested in examining the relationship between weekly level of physical activity and Tendinosis. To gather my sample I interview a group of Male participants to determine whether each of them meet the following criteria: between the age of 20 and 30 years old, healthy diet, and no previous rheumatoid disorder diagnosis. Once I have 5 men who meet these criteria, I stop sampling. I ask these 5 men how many hours per week they participate in cardiovascular physical activity. I end up with the following set of scores:

5, 6, 3, 1, 14

a. What sampling procedure did I use to gather my participants? Why would I choose this sampling procedure? What is another sampling method you could use and how would you use it?

b.Calculate the Mean, Median and Mode for the sample. Are there any scores which may skew the results of these measures?

Explanation / Answer

(a)

The sampling procedure used is informative/purposive sampling because you chose each individual with the criteria you required and then stopped once the sample is collected.

You could use simple random sampling where you could first find at least 15-20 individuals meeting the criteria and then chose 5 out of the selected ones to find the required sample.

(b)

Mean = (5+6+3+!+14)/5=29/5=5.8

Median = 3rd largest value=5

Mode= no mode

Yes the scores are skwed because mean and median are not equal.
