Example of using statistics in health care especially clinical trials.
A clinical trial plays a crucial role in the drug development process and statistics is involved in each step of the clinical trial from initial study design to protocol development, sample size estimation, data management, study monitoring, data analysis to determine the outcome and reporting. Clinical trial is a carefully designed study which tests the benefits and risks of a specific medical treatment or intervention (e.g. a new drug) on human subjects. For launching new drugs in the market, it is mandatory to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the drugs by conducting multi-phase clinical trials.
1. What questions you be interested in answering:
- Determine the efficacy of the new drug vs a placebo or control
- Determine whether the drug is safe for human administration
- Determine the sample size required to draw meaningful inference and power of test.
- Compare the effectiveness of the new drug vs the competitors
- Determine key technical aspects of the drug like pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

Prior to data collection study design will include controlling factors that contribute to variability and bias such as the subject selection, treatment application, statistical inference and methods of analysis perform randomization, blinding etc. Samples will be collected and parameters of interest like plasma drug concentration, data related to patient safety, data related to vital physical tests like ECG, pulmonary function test, blood pressure, neurological test, vision test data etc.
3. What statistics do you want to find such as mean, median, variance:
Determine statistical parameters like mean, median, mode, standard deviation, power of test, sample size, hypothesis testing, type-1 and type-2 error, p value and confidence intervals. Parametric tests (like Anova) for normally distributed variables or Non parametric test (like Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed rank test for non -normally distributed variables. Other tests may include correlation analysis, regression analysis, survival analysis etc.
5. Conclusions that can be drawn based on the results would include the efficacy of the drug against placebo, safety profile of the drug, drug effectiveness vs competitors etc.
