Question
Specify a large population that you might want to study and describe the type numeric measurement that you will collect (examples: a count of things, the height of people, a score on a survey, the weight of something). What would you do if you found a couple outliers in a sample of size 100? What would you do if you found two values that were twice as big as the next highest value? You may use examples from your area of interest, such as monthly sales levels of a product, file transfer times to different computer on a network, characteristics of people (height, time to run the 100 meter dash, statistics grades, etc.), trading volume on a stock exchange, or other such things
Explanation / Answer
EXAMPLE OF LARGE POPULATION:
In an industry, measurement of thickness of a material:
Sample of size 100: 100 Nos. of measurements of thickness:
Suppose:
We get 2 values equal or more than 2.5 Cm, whereas the maximum of other 98 values is only 1.25 cm.
Action to be taken:
These 2 vaues are outliers.
Find out any assignable cause exists through Failure Modes Effects and Criticality nalysis (FMECA): like operator error, shift change, machine setting, raw material quality deficiency. Them, remove the root cause. Continue the process neglecting these 2 outliers.
Sometimes, we may not be able to get any assignable cause. In that case, omit these 2 outliers, considering the 2 outliers due to statistical nature.
