Question

Listen to the Tegrity Lecture on Blackboard and complete the following: An investigator is interested is determining whether infant child care leads to an insecure attachment bond between children and their mothers during the first year of life as well as into the preschool years. What research method and design would you use for this study, and why? An investigator is interested in determining whether a new drug is as effective as diet and exercise in lowering cholesterol levels in an adult sample. What research method and design would you use for this study, and why? An investigator is interested in determining whether sociability in children is related to school achievement and whether this relationship varies for children in preschool, grade school, and middle school. What research method and design would you use for this study, and why?

Explanation / Answer

(1) Observational study:

We can define our target variable for measurement as binary response from mothers whether they realise the weakening bonding with children.

2 Samples: 1 the segment of mothers whose child go to child care and another one whose doesnt go.

Compare the proportion of 2 categories using 2-independent sample proportion test.

(2) Experimental study:

We divide the population of adults into 2. One will be fed drugs and another no drug, only diet & exercise.

Response variable: measure the cholesterol level for both the samples and compare using 2 sample t-test with normality assumption.

(3) Observational study:

There will be 2 factors with 3 levels in each. Perform ANOVA to test the significant of factor on response.
