Question

Researchers were interested in how females rated their closest female friend on levels of satisfaction, intimacy, emotional support, loyalty, and tangible help. To do this, 100 female participants completed measures of:

1. Basic demographics:

a. age in months (Variable name “sage”)

b. ethnicity (Variable name “sethnic”)

c. year in college (Variable name “college”)

d. where they live now (Variable name “whlive”)

e. the family composition of the house they grow up in (Variable name “house”)

2. The number of female friends they currently have (Variable name “fnum”)

3. The length of the friendship with their closest female friend (Variable name “flength”)

4. Their Satisfaction with their closest female friendship: (Variable name “Satisfaction” from items fsat1, fsat2, fsat3, fsat4, and fsat5)

5. 32 questions about their friendship quality with their closest female friend: a. 8 questions about Intimacy (Variable name fgill2, fgill7, fgill9, fgill16, fgill18, fgill21, fgill25, and fgill30) b. 8 questions about Emotional Support (Variable name fgill3, fgill5, fgill11, fgill13, fgill19, fgill23, fgill27, and fgill32) c. 8 questions about Loyalty (Variable name fgill4, fgill6, fgill12, fgill14, fgill20, fgill22, fgill28, and fgill29) d. 8 questions about Tangible Help (Variable name fgill1, fgill8, fgill10, fgill15, fgill17, fgill24, fgill26, and fgill31) Tutrial: In the tutrial, we showed you how to compute Intimacy using the 8 questions about intimacy listed above. Using the information from the tutrial and the SPSS lab manual, answer the questions below.

Questions 1. Working as a research assistant you are asked to compute sums for all the multiple items scales (satisfaction, emotional support, loyalty, or tangible help). How would you do this in SPSS? (Use your manual to tell me what steps I would follow to find these sums) You only have to describe the steps for one of the multiple items scales.

2. Tell me how you would name the Target Variable or the new variable you created?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

To compute sum for multi item scales , I would do the following in SPSS

For computing sum for Intimacy

Step 1- Open the data file in SPSS

Step 2-Navigate to Transfor -> Compute form (Menu options)

Step 3- Enter the target variable

Step 4-Select all the corresponging items and move them to the numerica expression

Step 5-Insert a plus between all item varables

fgill2 + fgill7 + fgill9 + fgill16 + fgill18 + fgill21 + fgill25 +fgill30

Step 6- Click ok

Question 2

The target variable will be names such that it has information about the variable and the calculation being done on correspoinding items. There will no space between letters.

For example, Sum_Intimacy.

It will be numeric and have a label name (e.g. sum of items on intimacy) and a scale measure.
