Question

A mean average of 60 on 7 exams is needed to pass a course. On her first 6 exams, Sheryl received grades of 52, 67, 72, 62, 64 and 74 What grade must she receive on her last exam to pass the course? An average of 70 is needed to get a C in the course. Is it possible for Sheryl to get a C? O No O Yes If her lowest grade of the exams already taken is to be dropped, what grade must she receive on her last exam to pass the course? If her lowest grade of the exams already taken is to be dropped, what grade must she receive on her last exam to get a C in the course?

Explanation / Answer

The total grades received in first six exams = 52+67+72+62+64+74 = 391 grades

(a.) For passing the exam one must have a mean average of 60 grades

Thus total grades received (in all 7 exams) = 7*60 =420 grades

Hence grades must in the 7th exam in order to pass the course =( Total grades required - Total grades received in first 6 exams)

= 420-391

=29

Therefore she must get 29 grades in order to pass the course.

(b.) In order to get a C in the course needded average = 70 grades

Therefore, total grades needed to get a C = 7*70 = 490 grades

In the first 6 exams she got = 391 grades

Thus she grades needed in 7th exam to get a C = 490 - 391 = 99 grades

Now, In the question the maximmum grades for an exam is not mentioned.

Assuming that the maximum grade possible in single exam is 100 grades.

Then she can get a C if she gets 99 grades in the 7th exam.

(c.) If her lowest grade of the examsalready takenis to be dropped, it will be her first exam grades, i.e. 52.

therefore new sum of all grades = 67+72+62+64+74 = 339 grades

Now total number of exams taken will be =6 (as first grades are already dropped)

Total grades must be received in 6 exams to pass = 6*60 = 360

Therefore grades she must receive in the last exam (to pass the course) =( Total grades required - Total grades received in already taken exams)

= 360 - 339

= 21

Therefore she must get 21 grades in order to pass the course.

(d.) If her lowest grade of the examsalready takenis to be dropped, it will be her first exam grades, i.e. 52.

therefore new sum of all grades = 67+72+62+64+74 = 339 grades

Now total number of exams taken will be =6 (as first grades are already dropped)

Total grades must be received in 6 exams to get a C = 6*70 = 420

Therefore grades she must receive in the last exam (to get a C the course) =( Total grades required - Total grades received in already taken exams)

= 420 - 339

= 81

Therefore she must get 81 grades in order to get a C in the course.
