Question
Suppose that a severe virus is impacting a bee colony and the population of bees has a half-life of 5 days.
What approximate daily percentage of decay does the bee colony demonstrate?
this is my answer 70/5=14%
(Round to two decimals. Hint: use the Rule of 70 backwards by dividing by the half-life period instead of the rate.)
What percentage of the original bee colony would be surviving after 20 days of decay?
I can't find the right answer for this one. I have 4.89% wich is wrong, I tried 4.9% and is wrong too. So Help !
Explanation / Answer
This question can be solved as follows:
Initially, lets assume the population was 1
After 5 days, the population gets halved as 5 is the half life.
Now the surviving population is 0.5.
After next 5 days, the population gets halved again so the population after 10 days is 0.25 or 25%
After 15 days, the population halves to 12.5% and so after 20 days, 6.25% is the surviving population
