Making Predictions. In problems 3 and 4, let the predictor variable x be the first variable given. Us the given data to find the regression equation and the best predicted value of the

response variable. Be sure to follow the prediction procedure summarized in figure 10-5, on page 559.

Problem 4. (3 points) Automobile Fuel Economy - The engine displacement (in liters) and combined city/highway miles per gallon (MPG) of a random sample of 45 automobiles was measured. The linear correaltion coefficient is r = 0.285 and the regression equation is = 35.165-1.5897x, where x represents the engine displacement. The mean of the 45 engine displacements is 1.87 liters and the mean of the 45 combined miles per gallon is 32.2 MPG. What is the best predicted MPG for an automible with an engine displacement of 3.8 liters? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

Explanation / Answer

we are given the regression equation is

= 35.165-1.5897x

so x = 3.8 , we put this value in the above fitted equation

35.165-1.5897*3.8 = 29.12

hence the predicted value is 29.12
