Question
The Student Monitor surveys 1163 undergraduates from four-year colleges and universities throughout the United States semiannually to understand trends among college students. Recently, the Student Monitorreported that the average amount of time listening to the radio per week was 11.8 hours. Of the 1163 students surveyed, 83% said that they listened to the radio, so this collection of listening times has around 198 (17%× 1163) zeros. Assume that the standard deviation is 8.4 hours.
a) Give a 99% confidence interval (± 0.01) for the mean time spent per week listening to the radio. The 99% confidence interval is from___ to ____ hours.
Explanation / Answer
a. Here n=1163 so we will use z distribution
z value for 99 CI = 2.58, as from z table we can see that for P(-2.58<z<2.58)=0.99
Now Margin of Error=z*sd/sqrt(n)=0.635
Hence CI=mean+/-E=11.8+/-0.635=(11.165,12.435)
