Question
A work sampling study of a car repair shop found that an allowance of 12% was acceptable. Average rated performance was 90%. During the course of an 8-hour study, the number of times the following activities occurred was as follows: Maintenance activities: 22 Test-driving vehicle: 4 Idle time: 2 During the study period, 6 cars left the shop a. What is the observed time for maintenance, in min/vehicle? b. What is the observed time for test-driving, in min/vehicle? c. What is the total standard time for vehicle repairs, in min/vehicle?Explanation / Answer
a. Observed time for maintenance = SUM OF ALL OBSERVED TIMES/ NUMBER OF OBSERVED CYCLES
= 480/22 = 21.82 Min/Vehicle.
b.Observed time for Test Driving = SUM OF ALL OBSERVED TIMES/ NUMBER OF OBSERVED CYCLES
=480/4 = 120 Min/Vehicle
c. Observed Time for Vehicle Repairs = 480/6 = 80 min/Vehicle
we know that Normal Time NT = Observed Time * Performance Rating
= 80*0.90 = 72 Min/Vehicle
Now, Standard Time (ST) = Normal Time (NT) /(1-AF) = 72/(1-.12)
=72/.88 = 81.82 Min/Vehicle
