Question

Problem 6-36 modified Consider the system in Figure 6-14. The reliabilities in the table below apply to the first 100 hours of operation. (Note that component 2 should have lines connecting it to the system.)

(a) Determine the system reliability.
Reliability=

(b) Upgrade component 4 to .9 reliability. Recompute the system reliability.
Reliability=

(c) Another possible upgrade is to replace the type-4 component with two type-4 components in parallel, each at the original reliability of 0.85. Recompute the reliability for that system.
Reliability=

Component Reliabality 1 0.80 2 0.85 3 0.75 4 0.85 5 0.75 6 0.80

Explanation / Answer

Solution:-
a) Reliability = 0.80*0.85*0.75*0.85*0.75*0.80
   = 0.2601

(b) Upgrade component 4 to 0.9 reliability.Recompute the system reliability.then

Reliability = 0.80*0.85*0.75*0.90*0.75*0.80
= 0.2754

(c) Another possible upgrade is to replace the type-4 componentwith two type-4 components in parallel, each at the originalreliability of 0.85.
Since the components are parallel therefore the systemreliability is the maximum probability i.e., here it is 0.85
which is the system reliability.
