The Nenana ice Classic is an annual contest to guess the exact time that a tripod will fall through the ice into the Tanana river during the spring thaw. Winners can receive in excess of $300,000. The contest has kept detailed records of the date this event has occurred for almost 100 years. Can we use this data to determine whether the earth is warming (at least in Alaska)? The data records the number of days from April 19th that the tripod falls through the ice. In 1998 the tripod fell on April 20, h or 1 day after the 19th. The entry for 2003 is 10, so 10 days after the 19th, so the tripod fell on April 29^th. a) Create a histogram or dot plot showing the distribution of the days from April 19th that the tripod fell. That is, how many times was the time 1 -5 days, how many times was it 6 -10, etc. You can divide the data into bins that make sense to you. b) Calculate the 5 number summary, mean and standard deviation for the data set. What is the median date - month and day? c) Make a time plot for the data. d) Divide the data into 4 roughly equal periods of 1917 -1939, 1940 - 1962, 1963 -1985, and 1986 - 2010. Make 4 boxplots, one for the breakup dates for each of these periods, and place them on the same set of axis to compare them side by side. e) Discuss what if anything we might be able to say about global warming from this data. Your discussion should include specific references to the information you obtained in parts a) - d) above.
