Question

Zhou, Vohs, and Baumeister (2009) showed that handling money reduces the perception of pain. In the experiment, a group of college students was told that they were participating in a manual dexterity study. Half of the students were given a stack of money to count and the other half got a stack of blank pieces of paper. After the counting task, the participants were asked to dip their hands into bowls of very hot water (122°F) and rate how uncomfortable it was. The following data show ratings of pain similar to the results obtained in the study.

Explanation / Answer

R-code:

money <- c(7,8,10,6,8,5,7,12,5)
paper <- c(9,11,13,10,11,9,15,14,10)
t.test(money, paper,conf.level=0.99)

Output:

   Welch Two Sample t-test

data: money and paper
t = -3.5789, df = 15.956, p-value = 0.002518
alternative hypothesis: true difference in means is not equal to 0
99 percent confidence interval:
-6.8619540 -0.6936016
sample estimates:
mean of x mean of y
7.555556 11.333333

So the confidence interval is: (-6.8619540 , -0.6936016)
