Question

Flower color can be a very important trait in plants because the flower serves as a means of attracting the pollinator (the organism responsible for moving the pollen around). Animals are attracted to flowers based on a number of factors, but a very important feature is the color of the flower. Flowers need to appeal to the pollinator and be easy to locate in the environment. The better a flower is at attracting pollinators, the better its chances at reproducing both by being the father (by donating pollen) and the mother (by receiving pollen) of more offspring. Therefore, pollinator preferences often influence the coloration, odor, and other characteristics of the flower by influencing the reproductive success of different varieties of flowers.

Snapdragon flowers can have many different colors including red, pink, yellow, white, blue, etc. In this study, the authors wanted to look at two color varieties, yellow and white, in a completely new environment (where snapdragons do not normally occur) to see if there would be any differences in reproductive success between yellow-flowered and white-flowered individuals. Forty-eight plants with known genotypes (12 FF (yellow), 24 Ff (yellow), and 12 ff (white)) were kept in pots and watered daily so that all plants survived the experiment. Plants were arranged so that each interior plant had 6 equidistant neighbors that were randomized for color. Plants were visited by foraging bumblebees, mostly Bombus appositus. After the experiment 200 randomly selected seeds were germinated and genotyped for flower color.
