DEFINITION researcher assigns the individuals in a study to a certain changes the value of an explanatory variable and then records the value of the response variable for each group, the study is a which Is Better? A Designed or an observational Study? To answer this question, let's consider another study. MPLE 3 DO Flu Shots Benefit Seniors? Researchers wanted to determine the long-term benefits of the influenza vaccine on seniors aged 65 years and older. The researchers looked at records of over 36.000 seniors for 10 years. The seniors were into two Group 1 were seniors who chose to get a flu vaccination shot, and group seniors who chose not to get a flu vaccination shot. After observing the seniors for 10 was that seniors who get flu shots are less likely to be hospitalized for pneumonia or influenza and 48% less likely to die from pneumonia or (Source Kristin ames rain, ko H PhD helline "M 1,2007) Wow! The results of this study sound great! All seniors should go out and get a flu shot. Right? Not necessarily. The authors were concerned about confounding. They were concerned that lower hospitalization and death rates may have been due to something

Explanation / Answer

Example3: Designed experiment is anytime better, because we get to see the results that we are hoping for. Like we wanted to know if flu shots are effective, so 36000 seniors were divided into 2 groups seniors who chose to get flu vaccination and seniors who chose not to get the flu vaccination. These groups were observed for 10 years and it was found that seniors who took the vaccine were 27% less likely to be hospitalized for pneumonia or influenza and 48% less likely to die of pneumonia or influenza.

If we would have just observed these 36000 seniors for 10 years, we would never have known the effect of flu vaccine.

9) It is an observational study because there is no experiment involved. The reseachers have just observed the rate of luekemia who lived within 1/2 mile of high tension wires to the rate of leukemia who did not lived within 1/2 mile of high tension wires.

10) It is an experiment as rats are divided into 2 groups. One group is given 5mg of medication that is thought to fight cancer and the second group is given 10mg. After 2 years the spread of cancer is measured.

11) This is also an experiment as half of the students are taught math by traditional techniques and the remaining half by a reform method. After 1 year, each group is given an achievement test to compare proficiency.
