It travels 215 mi going downstream in the same amount of time. what is the rate of the boat in still water and what is the rate of the current? Rate of the boat in still water: mi/h Rate of the current: Submit Assignment 02018 McGraw-Hill Education, All Rights Reserved. Terms of Use l Privacy | Accessibility

Explanation / Answer

we know time x speed = distance.

let speed in motorboat = u

speed of current = v

relative velocity in downstream = u+v (as boat and current are in same direction)

relative velocity in upstream = u-v (as boat and current are in different direction)

so, time x speed = distance

implies in down stream,

5 x (u+v) = 215

u+v = 43......... (1)

upstream,

5x(u-v) = 165

u-v = 33.........(2)

adding 1 and 2 will give, 2u = 76 implies, u = 38.

substitute u value in equation2 will give v = 5

So, velocity of motor boat is 38 mi/h and current is 5 mi/h
