Question

Name Lab section 4. (10 pts total) You isolated three bacterial species growing together within a biofilm located in a Yellowstone hot sulfur spring: species A is an organoheterotroph, species B is a lithoautotroph, and species C is a photoheterotroph e species within the biofilm that acts as a primary producer and one that acts as a consumer using all of the following terms correctly: organic, inorganic, assimilation, dissimilation. (b) 4 pts: Which species in this biofilm will determine whether the localized carbon cycle is complete versus incomplete? Explain why, and then give the environmental change that will force the cycle to be incomplete.

Explanation / Answer

4(a) . Primary Producer : A lithoautotroph is a microbe which derives energy from dissimilation of reduced compounds of mineral origin. Lithoautotrophs are a type of lithotrophs with autotrophic metabolic pathways. Since they can generate energy from an inorganic compound and fix CO2 as autotrophs, they may play a fundamental role in primary production in environments that lack sunlight.

Consumer: organoheterotroph assimilates organic material as food from another organism.

4(b). The lithoautotrophs will determine whether the localized carbon cycle is complete Vs in complete because they can fix CO2 as autotrophs.

Direct emissions of CO2 from burning fossil fuels, which transfers carbon from the geosphere into the atmosphere and deforestation will force the cycle to be incomplete
