Question
For Practice: on your observations of phagocytosis in Tetrahymena, do you think this process is selective in these organisms? Explain why or why not. 12. How does the process of phagocytosis differ from other types of cell transport suchas facilitated diffusion? 13. The vesicle formed by phagocytosis fuses to a common cellular organelle. Based on your knowledge of cell biology, what organelle would you expect it to fuse to? 14. In what human cells would you expect phagocytosis to be prevalent? Why? What is the function of phagocytosis in these cells?Explanation / Answer
11) Phagocytosis is a kind of endocytosis in which the cells ingest the solid particle such as food substances to form an internal compartment known as phagosome. The process of phagocytosis is found not only in Tetrahymena but also in other protists such as amoeba.
12) Facilitated diffusion requires channel proteins to transport small polar or charged particle down the concentration gradient. Phagocytosis does not require channel proteins and the particles are transported against the concentration gradient.
13) The vesicle formed by phagocytosis (phagosome) fuses with lysosome. The hydrolytic enzymes present in the lysosome then digests the food paricles present inside the phagosome.
14) Phagocytosis is prevalent in immune cells like neutrophils, dendritic cells, macrophages and B lymphocytes. These cells fight against foreign antigens like bacteria and engulf them using phagocytosis and contribute to the immunity of the body.
