Question

A bag made from dialysis membrane contains an aqueous solution of 2 mM protein and 0.25 mM sodium iodide (NaI). The bag is carefully weighed and placed into an aqueous solution of 1.0 mM starch and 0.5 mM sodium chloride (NaCl). After incubating for one hour, for each of the following parameters, indicate what you would expect to have happened and briefly explain why

Net weight of the bag [increase (?), decrease (?), no change (NC)

b) Sodium ion concentration INSIDE the bag [increase (?), decrease (?), no change (NC)

c) Chloride ion concentration OUTSIDE the bag [increase (?), decrease (?), no change (NC)

d) Iodide ion concentration OUTSIDE the bag [increase (?), decrease (?), no change (NC)

e) Starch concentration INSIDE the bag [increase (?), decrease (?), no change (NC)

Explanation / Answer

a) Net weight of the bag:increases: This happens because the solution in the bag has higher solute concentration than the solution outside the bag. So water will enter the bag through osmosis and thus will increase the weight.t

b) Sodium ion concentration inside the bag: Sodium ion concentration inside the bag increases- To neutralise the ionic gradient Na+ ions will move from higher concentration area(putside) to lower concentration area(inside)

c) Chloride ion concentration: ouside the will decrease as the chloride ions will move from higher concentration outside area to lower concentration inside area.

d) Iodide ion concentration outside the bag will have No change. Reason being the outside of the bag has lesser osmolarity than the inside of the bag.

e) Starch concentration inside the bag: Will not change: As the starch is a large molecule and cannon pass through the dialysis membrane.
