Question

Question:

Calculate the equivalent capacitance for C1 and C2 connected in series and in parallel using the average experimental values in table 1. Record your results in table 2 under “Calculated Values”.

Obiective: You will measure an unknown capacitance and confirm the validity of the series-parallel equations for capacitors. You will also measure atime constant and obtain a decay curve for a capacitor. Apparatus: D.C. power supply, Capacitors, Digital Multimeter, 202 resistor and wires. Procedure: a) Measurement of an unknown capacitance l. Set up the circuit shown in figure 1.In setting up the circuit, place the elements in approximately the same positions on the table as indicated in figure 1 Locate the elements in a sensible way so that connections are easily made and easily traced. Capacitor C is known and C1 is unknown. Record the known value of Cin table l 2. Make sure that the voltmeter is set on "DC volts" throughout this experiment. The power supply voltage is in the range 0 to 25 volts, so start out with the meter set on a scale that will accommodate this range. It is best to set the meter on a high range at first until you know approximate what voltages you are dealing with. Measure the ly battery voltage. Record it in table l as VB 3.Let the capacitors charge for a few seconds, then close switch S and immediately read V. You must observe the initial reading of V because the voltmeter has a finite resistance and begins to discharge C1 so that the reading falls. Record your results in table 1. The unknown capacitance is calculated as follows: The battery voltage is the sum of the voltages on each capacitor: (1) C C The voltage on Ci is (2) By elimination of q between (1) and (2) we find C CA-1) (3) Use (30 to compute C1 and record the result in table l. Repeat the procedure once or twice, then enter the average value of Clin table 1. Between trials it is necessary to disconnect the capacitors from the circuit and discharge them by placing a clip lead directly across their terminals for several seconds. Repeat the entire procedure for the other unknown capacitor C2 (b) Capacitors in Series and in Parallel In place of C1 in figure 1,place C1 and C2 in series as shown in figure 2. Measure the capacitance by the procedure of (a). Repeat using C and C2 connected in parallel as in figure 3. Record all data in table 1 and complete the indicated calculations.

Explanation / Answer

C1 and C2 connected in series

1/Ceq=1/C1 +1/C2 =1/1.6 +1/0.95

Ceq=0.596 uF

C1 and C2 connected in parallel

Ceq=C1+C2=1.6+0.95=2.55 uF
