Question

Let's take two different tasks - reaching for an object and standing balance, Let's combine the two as the situation below describes. Say that you are standing roughly arms length from a counter. On the counter is a cup filled with liquid. The task is to grab the cup and take a drink without spitting the contents of the cup. Obviously you can (and should) use some combination strategy of reaching and leaning to complete the task. Describe the difference in strategy for drinking from a cup that is only partially full versus a cup that is completely full. Why would the strategy be different between the two? Would you lean more or less? Use a straight arm or bent arm? Include the relevant concepts from both balance (COP and base of support) and kinematics when discussing your answer and support all arguments with ideas from the course.

Explanation / Answer

The strategy for drinking from a cup that is partially filled versus a cup that is completely full must be different because completely filled cup is less stable as compared to partially filled cup. As we pour liquid in the cup height of the Centre of mass of the cup from the ground increases hence its potential energy increases which causes the instability of the completely filled cup. When we try to pick up the cup it will get displaced from its equilibrium position and the liquid may get spilled out of the cup.

In order to pick completely filled cup we must lean more as compared to partially filled cup so that we can pick up the cup from a point which is much closer to the bottom or much near the Centre of mass of the cup so that rotation of cup and hence the spilling of liquid must be avoided.

Bent arm must be used to pick the completely filled cup.
