Question

A linearly polarized plane wave from a red HeNe laser is incident on the polished surface of a BK7 glass substrate (n = 1.511) at an angle of incidence of 45 degree. The incident light is polarized at an angle of 45 degree to the plane of incidence, which means that E_0I can be resolved into equal P- and S-polarized components oscillating in phase with each other. What is the polarization angle of the reflected light, i.e. the angle that the reflected field E_0R makes with respect to the plane of incidence?

Explanation / Answer

The case is of linear polarization and for the glass n= 1.511 and angle of incidence= 45degree

From Fresnel's equation we get the Brewster angle = arctan (n2/n1) where n2= laser medium and n1=glass medium in this case, HeNe laser n= 1.59

= arctan (1.59/1.511)

or = 46.39 degree
