(Specifically. please consider the issue of tools for repair and maintenance.) Please also discuss whether you prefer to buy products designed with the metric system or the English system.

Explanation / Answer

Earlier in different countries people used to have different systems of units. Many of then were not standardized. Standardization was done usually by the ruling kings. English system of measurement also called imperial system was developed in England. Due to the colonial influence of British Empire this system was used in many countries all over the world. Metric system of measurement was developed by the French around 1800. This is a decimal system of measurement. It is now called the International Unit System ( SI System).

Presently all most all countries in the world use the International System including all the major industrilised nations except the USA. Only USA , Liberia and Myanmar have not adopted the International system legally. UK also uses the English system for many purposes.

Major difference between the International System and the English System is in multiples of units. In the International System units are given as multiples of 10. For example milli meter(10-3 m) , centi meter (10-2 ) etc.

International System units for Length - meter (m) , for mass - kilo gram (kg) , for time -second ( s) , force -Newton(N ) etc. where as for English unit System for Length - foot (ft) , for mass pound , for time- second(s)

force- pound force etc.

Most of the English units are developed for usage in trade and commerce where as the International Units focus on science and technology. The International system makes it easy for exchange of goods scientific and technical between different countries. The names of the units are derived from Latin and Greek which have more international acceptance than names of english units. Some English units such as pound for mass , force and also currency create confusion and have led to failures such as the Mars orbiter mission.

International System of Units is to be preferred when designing tools meant for usage in the other countries.
