Question
(Basic Mechanical Equilibrium) Can you show me how to do this step by step? I am probably doing it wrong. I will very much appreciate a thorough answer.
Here is what I have. Let me know the concept I am missing.
0.5k(x-x0)^2=mg(x-x0)
0.5k(0.1m)^2=0.5kg(9.81m/(s^2))(0.1m)
Solving for k, I get 98kg/s^2. This is wrong becuase k should be a constant.
It might be 0.5kg(9.81m/(s^2))=k(0.1m)
Solving for k, I get 49kg/(s^2)
(2 pts) A spring is stretched by a mass attached to a pulley, as shown below. Assuming that the starting length of the spring is 300 cm, it's final length is 310 cm and the attached mass is 0.5 kg, what is the spring constant (k)? Please include units. X0 Figure 5.11a PhyminalRiology of cellExplanation / Answer
Tension acting on the string = kx
weight of the block = mg
weight = tension
mg = kx
0.5*9.8 = k*(3.1 - 3)
k = 49 N /m
