The Statistical Abstract of the United States, 2003, provided data from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia (DC) on many variables, including percentage of residents with a college education and the murder rate. Using Minitab, it was found that there was a small correlation between murder rates (y) and the percentage of college-educated residents (x), with a regression equation y = -3.1 + 0.33x.

a. Based on the slope of the regression line, is the correlation positive or negative? Interpret what that means about the relationship between murder rates and the percentage of college-educated citizens.

b. As it turns out, DC had a murder rate that was several times greater than any other state. When that influential point was removed from the analysis, the new regression equation was y = 8.0 – 0.14x. Explain how the removal of that point affected the correlation between the variables.

Explanation / Answer

a) The regression equation is y = -3.1 + 0.33x.

Based on the slope of the regression line, is the correlation is positive because the regression coefficient is positive. This indicates that the correlation between the murder rates and the percentage of college-educated citizens. is 0.33. i.e., 33% of the college-educated citizens are involved in murders.

b) The new regression equation is y = 8.0 – 0.14x.

The removal od the influential point (DC) changed the positive correlation in to negative correlation.i.e., murder rates and college edicated citizens are inverselyrelated.i.e., as the citizens become educated the murder rates decreases
