Question
This question is also based on the study which shows the distribution of BMI in children living in U.S. and European urban neighborhoods. In each of the following categories, the data are in millions. In U.S. urban neighborhoods, 125 M are found to be in the normal weight range, 50 M overweight, and 40 M obese. In European neighborhoods, 101 M are found to be in the normal weight range, 42 M overweight, and 21 M obese. If a child is selected at random, what is the probability that a child lives in a U.S. urban neighborhood and is obese?
Explanation / Answer
TOTAL PEOPLE WE HAVE = 125+101 = 226
THE TPTAL OBESSE WE HAVE = 40
PROBABILITY OF AMERICANS = 125/226 = 0.553
WHILE THE PROBABILITY OF OBESE IN US = 40/125 = 0.32
THEREFORE THE PROBABILITY THAT SELECTED PERSON IS US AND OBESSE = 0.553*0.32 = 0.177
