Question
Suppose that you were interested in investigating the effect of a drug that is to be used in the treatment of patients who have glaucoma in both eyes. A comparison between the mean reduction in eye pressure for this drug and for a standard treatment is desired. Both treatments are applied dirctly to the eye.
a. Describe how you would go about collecting data for your investigation.
b. Does your method result in paired data?
Can you think of a reasonable method of collecting data that would not result in paired samples? Would such an experimet be as informative as a paired experiment? Comment.
Explanation / Answer
A. Based on experiments on patients with glaucoma in both eyes we must collect a large number of observations. The observations must include the dosage of the drug given(say in mg or mL) and the reduction in eye pressure after giving the drug. A time frame must also be kept to know after what time the drug starts it's effect and hence reduce eye pressure at a given time.
B. The method is based on paired data of dosage and reduction in eye pressure.
In case we do want paired data then we must find out the appropriate dosage that can be given to a patient based on age, gender, health in general etc. This dosage must then be prescribed to the patient and the relevant data regarding reduction in eye pressure must be noted.
