Question

A researcher wanted to investigate the effects of a high glucose diet on the weight of Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). He randomly selected 100 adult hamsters to receive either (a) intravenous glucose (10 mg/min) or (b) intravenous saline for 30 minutes each day for 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 week period, he measured the weight (in ounces) of each hamster. Which test would you use to compare the groups? 2.Suppose in Question #1, the researcher only recorded whether or not each hamster showed an increase in its weight, instead of its actual weight, which test would you use?

Explanation / Answer

1.A independent samples t should be used. The Independent Samples t Test compares the means of two independent groups in order to determine whether there is statistical evidence that the associated population means are significantly different.

2.A paired t test should be used. Paired sample t-test is used to compare two population means in the case of two samples that are paired in some way or other. Paired sample t-test is used in 'before-after' studies, or when the samples are the matched pairs.
